Carolyn Dawson, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, niece, and friend, was born on September 30, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Preston and Emma (McLeod) Dawson. As the fifth of six children, Carolyn grew up in a vibrant household filled with love and laughter. She attended the Newark Public School System, completing her education at Cleland Grade School and South Side (Shabazz) High School.
After graduation, Carolyn worked with dedication and pride at Rutgers University and the U.S. Marshall Services before following her passion for nurturing children. She opened her own daycare, providing a safe environment for countless children in her community. Her first clients were her niece’s children and neighborhood kids, and she became a cherished figure in their lives. Carolyn’s heart was immense, and she welcomed two daughters into her home, Onuabuchi Okpon (Chi Chi) and Samantha Burgess (Diggs), raising them as her own.
Known for her silly sense of humor, Carolyn loved to laugh and spread joy, making everyone around her feel special. She was an aunt to everyone she encountered, showering love and support on all who crossed her path.
Carolyn was predeceased by three sisters, Pearl Duncan, Mildred Thomas, and Ruth Galloway, and two brothers, Carl Sharif and Clyde Dawson. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for those fortunate enough to have known her. Carolyn Dawson’s vibrant spirit, playful nature, and nurturing heart will be deeply missed, but her impact on the lives she touched will be remembered for generations to come. ”
